Today’s Groupon: for $78, you get a one-day introductory filmmaking course (a $281.37 value including HST) at Raindance’s Saturday Film School at the University of Toronto. Choose between two dates:
– Saturday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
– Sunday, March 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A day-long practical filmmaking course led by Raindance Film Festival founder Elliot Grove breaks the daunting cinema-creation process into digestible lectures, with separate talks on screenplay writing, production, directing, and breaking into the industry. Before committing the fancy-dancing and slow-punching scenes of your cinemagination to celluloid, it’s necessary to populate them with needy characters and filter them through an unpopular document known as a screenplay.
In the first 90-minute lecture, Elliot Grove will explain how to create coherent roles and arrange plot holes into a looping tunnel that critics will never escape. A talk full of nitty-gritty production tips follows, as Grove details the hard work of creating a budget, lighting scenes cheaply, shooting locations before they can call the police, and choosing a camera.
After a lunch break, director-producer Sean McConville will expound on the principles of direction, illustrating rules of camera placement and demonstrating the award- and money-based sign language used to communicate with actors. In a final one-hour session, Grove will explain how to craft CVs, negotiate pay, and make connections in the film industry. After the talk, participants meet in a nearby bar to play paper hockey with business cards and shoot guerilla-style footage for thrillers about drinking beer. Burgeoning film facilitators will also walk home with a 20-page handout packed with budget templates, a script-format guide, CV templates, and collectible gaffer trading cards.
