A line of girls wearing brightly colored dresses painted with Celtic knots dance in formation, their hard shoes clacking against the floor and tightly wound curls bouncing as their fast-moving feet become blurs. Irish dancing has long entranced people all across the world with its rapid steps and colorful costumes. And the Devoy Academy of Irish Dance teaches this art form with a bevy of classes for youths.
Its instructors, Kieran and Dympna DeVoy, have both danced since childhood and have reached top levels of competition. For the past five years, Kieran, who is the principal dancer in the Celtic Dance Company of Canada, has toured with Magic of the Dance—one of the most successful Irish-dance shows of all time—and performing in the lead role.
Now, Kieran and Dympna teach children a blend of traditional and contemporary dances that use both hard and soft shoes. Though many students dance with an eye toward competition, classes accommodate both competitors and dancers seeking a bit of Irish fun that doesn’t require them to hunt down a leprechaun.
