Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Before James Taylor told you that “You’ve Got a Friend,” before Aretha felt like “A Natural Woman,” before everyone was doing the Locomotion, there was just a girl from Brooklyn with a dream to make the earth move. The story of this meteoric impact on music begins in 1958, when Carole King’s mother forbids her 16-year-old daughter from going to Manhattan to sell a song to legendary producer Don Kirshner. Fortunately, Carole won’t take no for an answer. From those humble beginnings, she rockets into the stratosphere, writing decade-defining songs for the Shirelles, the Righteous Brothers, and the Chiffons. And from there she only went upward. Throughout her career she wrote more than 115 hits that charted on the Billboard Hot 100, accrued four Grammys, became a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and received the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize. But she also navigated her share of drama, from restless husbands to competitive friends.
In Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, the highs and lows of King’s early life come to surface through her music. Songs such as “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “I Feel the Earth Move” punctuate the story of the artist finding her voice. And that story has earned plenty of fans. Along with praise from the likes of Taylor Swift, Hillary Clinton, and Tom Hanks, it’s taken home Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, and even a Grammy Award for its soundtrack.
