A dozen dancers shake their hips in line, shuffling to the beat and sidling up to a new partner along the dance floor. This is a typical Thursday evening At Salsaholics Anonymous, whose vibrant atmosphere comes from both its students’ enthusiasm and its teachers’ energetic instruction. The dance gurus lead students of all skill levels—from those with two left feet to those with two right feet—in salsa-dancing techniques and style.
The beginner level starts with 5–10 lessons on salsa’s basic steps before students progress to the transition level, in which each week they will learn 3-4 new moves, including leading and connecting to the music. Those who cut rugs like champions can advance to the intermediate level to master complex routines and learn how to perform for an audience that isn’t just a row of stuffed animals lined up on your bed. Private assessments grant students one-on-one attention with an instructor, who can help them polish their technique or evaluate whether they are ready to graduate to the next class level.
