“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” So begins Hamlet, one of the Bard’s most iconic works and an undisputed literary classic. The king is dead, but his ghost haunts Elsinore as long as his murderous brother Claudius sits the royal throne and sleeps in the royal bed. And all the while, the deceased monarch’s son Hamlet stews as he plots bloody revenge on his treacherous uncle. To satisfy his wrath, he’ll do anything—feign madness, betray his friends, and soliloquize to a stubbornly silent skull—even if his drive for vengeance means certain disaster for everyone around him.

Taking inspiration from the shadowy world of film noir, the Classical Theatre Project’s production sets the protagonist loose in a criminal underworld to seek revenge. This journey focuses on Hamlet the man rather than Hamlet the prince, emphasizing his very human emotions of grief and rage among a blood-spattered landscape.

Classical Theatre Project
Countless theatre troupes perform Shakespeare plays. But very few of them have presented them over a million audience members across North America. At Classical Theatre Project, the ensemble strives to make William Shakespeare’s work appealing and relevant to a new generation of youth and pop culture.
