One day, Sharon Elston opened up a copy of Bon Appétit magazine, a simple act that would forever change her career path. That month’s issue happened to feature a hazelnut farm, which Elston contacted and then serviced as a fine-foods importer. In addition to fresh farmed hazelnuts, The Spice Lady represented a number of award winning products such as organic spices. Presenting them chef to chef, Elston was heralded with calls of “Here comes the spice lady!” The moniker stuck. With her kids out of the nest, Elston became a teaching chef. Today, in addition to teaching her own classes, Chef Sharon educates students in public kitchens and private schools as well as in corporate settings.
Now she teaches a wide variety of cooking classes of Global Cuisine such as Fusion Cuban and Skinny Summer Gourmet. Elston also visits college campuses to talk about nutrition and guides a walking group to help others reap the benefits of healthy living. She is also a registered food-safety instructor for certification by the various jurisdictions and colleges.
