When most people need a break from their job, they go on vacation for a week or two. When Hamid Kouchak was feeling burned out, he sold his company and took four years off. As he once shared with Toronto Life magazine, he decided to travel the world, snaking his way through Central and South America before heading to Asia.

Upon his return, he bought a 12,000-square-foot industrial space and decided to repurpose it as House of Moments, an art gallery, event space, and restaurant. With help from Chef Daniel Park, he created a menu that fuses Eastern cuisine with the flavors of Hamid’s native Iran. Dishes include pan-seared salmon with red-curry sauce, as well as signature sushi. The Persian roll, for example, packs pomegranate, burdock, beet, and masala sauce into rolled rice paper.

Like the menu, the design of the space is a seamless integration of influences. In the private art lounge, armless leather chairs and glass tables cluster beside walls hung with modern art. In one of the dining areas, wooden tables are sectioned off by carved temple doors and Buddha statues. The statues are relics from Hamid’s travels through Thailand, Cambodia, and India, where he collected dozens of antique pieces and presumably a few passport stamps.
