A pair of dancers crosses the stage, the woman’s legs weaving smoothly through the man’s in a series of silkily staccato kicks. The movements evoke the sizzling tension between control and passion, or a graceful run-in with someone in an extremely narrow hallway. This is Tango Legends, a live show celebrating the rich tradition of Argentinian tango. Throughout the evening, 14 award-winning dancers demonstrate precise footwork and smoldering glances, accompanied by a five-piece band and two singers. And the group’s passion for the passionate dance has won over more than audiences—the government of Buenos Aires, the birthplace of the tango, honored founders Mariela Maldonado and Pablo Sosa as “Outstanding Personalities of Culture” in 2012.
Sony Centre For The Performing Arts
- Opened: 1960
- Claim to fame: the venue is the largest soft-seat theatre in Canada
- Other claim to fame: its massive overhanging marquee
- Why that marquee is especially shiny: it recently received a shiny-making renovation
- What else was restored: the facility’s wood, brass, and marble accents
- In case you forget you’re at the theatre: just look at York Wilson’s mural, The Seven Lively Arts, on display in the lobby—it helpfully displays musical staffs and Greek theatre masks as reminders
