Cleats tear into the turf at the Rogers Centre, where the Toronto Argonauts fight for the franchise’s 16th Grey Cup. Established as a professional squad in 1873, the Argonauts originally played a primitive form of rugby that slowly evolved, adopting the rules and scoring associated with modern football. The team’s 139-year history makes it the oldest professional football club in North America. Its modern legacy includes 54 Canadian Football Hall of Famers and many fans who have claimed to invent nachos.
This season, quarterback Ricky Ray has led the attack, posting eight touchdowns, 1,757 yards, and a 69.8 completion percentage through six games. As Ricky calls the signals on the field, fans can show their support by donning a foam helmet, singing along with the brassy tunes of the Argonotes—the team’s 50-member, volunteer pep band—or tying dishtowels around their necks to emulate the cape-wearing mascot, Jason.
