Benihana Japanese Steakhouse – Fairmont Royal York

100 Front St. W, Toronto, ON M5J 1E3

Located inside the near century-old Fairmont Royal York hotel, the lines separating dinner and theatre are blurred at Benihana Japanese Steakhouse. Or rather, they’re chopped, sliced, and diced into a million pieces. This meld comes courtesy of the restaurant’s teppanyaki chefs, who twirl their knives through the air amid a whirlwind of sizzling steak pieces, scallops, and diced vegetables cooked to order on tabletop grills. Up to seven guests sit around the grill to watch as their meal is prepared by the showboating chef, who turns cooking into performance art and mouthwatering food into spectacle. Since 1964, this show has spawned Benihana restaurants in nearly every corner of the globe, and though it’s the juggling that draws diners to the tables, it’s the end product—the food—that keeps them coming back.
Benihana’s teppanyaki menu features filet mignon, lobster, scallops with shrimp, and ahi tuna, all of which are cooked hibachi-style and served with veggies, salad, soup, and the chef’s headshot and Broadway résumé. Although the fresh sushi isn’t prepared alongside a flaming onion volcano, its appearance is just as tantalizing. Also, exclusive to this Toronto location is the Izumi sake. Brewed from fresh Ontario spring water and prepared in accordance with traditional Junmai (pure rice) methods, this high-end sake bears a distinct fruity flavor and makes a perfect beverage to raise in reverence to your chef.
