When husband-and-wife business team Sara Kardan and Jeff Armstrong conceived of Her Majesty’s Pleasure, their ambitions already far exceeded the idea of a salon. They intended to create a lifestyle project that delivers a boutique beauty experience with an upscale social aspect, and they chose Toronto’s chic neighborhood of King West Village as the place to do it.
If one peers into this global-award-winning flagship location, a bit of confusion might ensue: Is the place a cocktail bar? A salon? A boutique? One would then be delighted to discover that it’s all three. Elegantly designed beauty bars offer services for the hands, feet, face, and hair throughout the space, playing counterpoint to the drink bar serving libations at the front. Patrons mill about, taking in the experience in singular relaxation or else chatting with friends.
Everywhere the eye turns, it sees the telltale signs of a modern, urban environment: exposed brick walls painted a clean white; pendant lights hovering above white marble countertops; floor-to-ceiling front windows that let in an abundance of natural light; and products so neatly arranged along the walls, they evoke apothecary bottles of potions and perfumes. The effect is one of expansiveness, lightness, and indulgent luxury. Within this space, the toughest choice a visitor has to make is whether they’ll take their champagne before or after their facial.
