He steals from the rich—and keeps it for himself. That’s the Robin Hood of this re-telling, anyway, and he’s hardly the hero most legends make him out to be. Instead, it’s the noble Maid Marion who steps up to bat when the villainous Prince John threatens the kingdom. Sword in hand, she heads into Sherwood Forest to rally the masses, but she’s got to get through the hard head of the titular thief first. Amid thrilling sword fights, fist fights, and gravity-defying rope tricks, the American indie-roots band Parsonsfield provides a live soundtrack.
Playing the title character is Tony-winning Broadway veteran Gabriel Ebert, but the star is Izzie Steele, who made her name in Shakespearean theatre and has appeared on Law and Order: SVU. Christian Lloyd (A Flea in Her Ear) and Sarah Schenkkan (Wicked) provide some levity as Marion’s cowardly clown and flighty sister, and a crew of stage and television veterans rounds out the Merry Men, with less emphasis on the “merry.” Joff Schmidt of CBC News found plenty to praise in this swashbuckling fresh take, calling it a “visually sumptuous, wildly energetic, and tremendously entertaining production.”
