The Scouting Report
On February 15, the Marlies briefly skate away from AHL play in order to host an international showdown against Färjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League. Before returning to their mission of winning a third straight North Division title, the Marlies will dispatch Spencer Abbot and T.J. Brennan—two of the AHL’s top scorers— against a venerable Färjestad squad that has epitomized European hockey since its players were thawed from the fjords in 1932.
Visiting from Karlstad, Sweden, Färjestad BK adds another milestone to its storied history, as it becomes the first Swedish Hockey League team to ever compete in North America. The game against the Marlies not only wraps up their trip, but it also brings an end to a full week of AHL all-star festivities, which also include Färjestad’s presence at the AHL All-Star Classic in St. John’s.
Toronto Marlies
As the American Hockey League affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Marlies take to the ice with a roster of young skaters on their way to an NHL career. Named after a legendary (but since dissolved) Junior A team, the Toronto Marlboros, the Marlies have had their share of success since their move to the city in 2005, including a 2011–2012 campaign in which they captured the Western Conference title and nearly hoisted the league’s hallowed Calder Cup. Crowds of up to 8,200 fans cheer the Marlies on from their home at Ricoh Coliseum, where team mascot Duke the Dog—his own name an homage to the Duke of Marlborough—dances in the stands.
