In 1999, the Filmi festival grew from a discouraging trend: South Asian filmmakers outside of the Bollywood circuit were underrepresented in the global film industry. Filmi—Hindi slang referring to anything associated with the Indian motion picture industry—enriches North American audiences with intimate glimpses into this unique artistic perspective. Since its inception in 2000, the festival has grown exponentially, screening dozens of documentaries, short films, and feature-length films created by emerging South Asian artists around the world. The staff carefully vets films for motifs that will easily translate to an international audience, bridging Eastern and Western perspectives through thought-provoking stories and instructional bridge-building videos.
