As the partnership between an old-school tailor and a self-professed “e-commerce geek,” Benson & Brown Tailors creates bespoke menswear for their clients in two ways: with in-person appointments at their newly-opened shop in Toronto and through online orders. Customers who visit the store receive in-person tailoring to ensure a well-fitted suit, with any necessary adjustments given free of charge. Whether visiting the store or ordering online, the clients’ measurements are taken to create custom patterns, which are then used to design shirts and full suits cut by hand. The tailors use Italian, Swiss, and two-ply cottons, which are in a book that online clients may order to get an exact feel for the materials. Benson & Brown acknowledges that creating custom apparel over the internet can be challenging, so they offer a guarantee for all first-time clients: if a garment doesn’t fit perfectly, it can be returned for complimentary adjustments or replacement, without any shipping costs. Once it’s perfected, patterns are archived so that returning clients can quickly commission additional garments and mannequins can prepare the right diet.
