Admission grants access to three different areas , which aim to cast guests in the leading role of a horror film. First, visitors venture into the CarnEvil Manor, where deranged carnival workers lurk behind every corner. At Quarantine 2, a zombie jail hopes to keep the undead from spreading their virus—until something goes wrong and the creatures attack. Finally, The Darkness plunges groups into pitch black and surrounds them in scenes straight from a nightmare.
With packages that include coffin rides, visitors slip into a full-size coffin and watch in horror as the lid shuts. The coffin then shakes, creates various smells, and simulates the feeling of bugs crawling over the skin. Powerhouse of Terror recommends that kids younger than 10 stay at home with a babysitter or responsible ghost.
Just because the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital was completely vacated when it shut down in 1979 doesn’t necessarily mean everyone left. Visitors flock to this supposedly haunted location around every Halloween, seeking out ghosts and scares from the staff of Powerhouse of Terror, who design multiple macabre areas, which in 2012 include CarnEvil Manor and the zombie-themed Quarantine 2: The Apocalypse. Elsewhere, storytellers lead haunted tours , sideshow performers walk on glass, and a coffin ride simulates the tactile sensations of being buried alive.
But under their layers of zombie flesh, the monsters at Powerhouse of Terror really have hearts of gold-coated zombie flesh. Most proceeds from their haunted attractions go to the PACT Urban Peace Program, which helps at-risk youth. Many of Powerhouse of Terror’s performers and staff are students, who gain valuable skills in areas such as set design, acting, and marketing.
