The National Chinese Acrobats astound audiences with hard-to-believe feats of balance, flexibility, and strength. The breathtaking athleticism and coordination draws oohs and aahs as contortionists twist their bodies into knots and balance atop their similarly curled compatriots, while nimble acrobats tumble through elevated rings with fearless aplomb. Plate-spinners flaunt their ironclad composure as they whirl up to 10 pieces of fine china on spindly sticks and martial artists demonstrate their skill with wooden staffs, guan dao glaives, and nunchucks in solo demonstrations and mock battles. The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony supplies the energizing soundtrack to the gravity-defying stunts, mixing traditional Chinese acrobatic arts with western music to create a full fusion of cultures.
The Sony Centre beckons audiences with a grand marquee over the entrance, protecting show-goers from the elements and indecently shaped clouds under a canopy of glowing bulbs. The gleaming auditorium’s uniquely curved walls evoke the texture of a woven basket, and its plush, baby blues seats keep patrons comfy throughout the performance.
