Within its exposed brick walls and walnut-butcher-block interior, Paese serves up a delectable collection of house-made, hand-crafted fare, incorporating traditional Italian techniques in food. Pastas are all handmade, and beef is dried and aged in house. Every dish is mandated by the resto’s “Inspired in Italy, Made in Canada” philosophy, so you know you’re getting meals not only made with a solid knowledge of Italian cooking, but with fresh local ingredients, some of which have been grown on owner Tony Loschiavo’s farm.

At each of Paese’s locations on Bathurst and King, you’ll get slightly different choices on the menus, all which pair nicely with a cocktail, or one of 20 wines by the glass (each handpicked by one of only 3 Master sommeliers in Canada, Bruce Wallner). Signature dishes are daily whole grilled fish, grilled octopus and escarole ($13), shrimp with cannelli beans and gremolata ($13), veal and spinach ravioli with sage and butter($20), lobster papardelle puttanesca ($19), funghi pizza ($15) and pear and gorgonzola salad ($13). Sides (all $6) include rapini with roasted garlic and olive oil, squash with maple and chilies, Brussels sprouts with bacon and asiago and roasted portobello mushrooms with smoked asiago. There are also more choice from the special late night menu, served until 11 p.m.
